About Duke

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Location: 84036
  • Housetrained: Yes
Duke is a 6 year old Corgi -- the debate is on as to whether he's a Pembroke with a tail, or a
Cardigan. Duke was first adopted from a shelter in Ohio, then he moved to Utah, where he has lived for three years.
Duke does not like to be groomed. He has not had a lot of training. He is definitely accustomed to
being his own boss and as such would benefit greatly from training. I've been working on that part and he seems to appreciate having rules in
my household -- "no you will not pull me down the street", "no the cat is not to be chased",
"yes I can brush you"! His new owner will need to be someone who can be consistent, firm, and in charge while being loving and gentle, in order to help Duke know that he doesn't have to be in charge.
Duke has some serious medical problems some of which appear to have arisen from an accident we think he may have had in the past. My vet feels that Duke was hit by a car, or fell out of one or something like that -- many years ago. He shows injuries to his spine from the L5 back to his tail. The ball that fits into the hip socket, on both hips, is improperly shaped. As a result, the ball doesn't fit into the socket very well at all. No wonder he does not like to be brushed, or rough housed with or even petted enthusiastically! It hurts the poor boy!

Now, my vet feels (and I whole heartedly agree) that Duke needs to be in a household where there
are no children. A single story home -- no steps. Duke may need pain meds eventually. I have
helped him get into the back of my SUV by training him to use a ramp -- he can still jump out if
I sort of catch him.

Despite his medical issues this guy is cuddly and seems to really like people, if they don't hurt him. He definitely is a special needs dog.

Duke is with Sue who can be contacted via email at: Onecoblyn@aol.com
