Snickers was pulled from a local shelter.  He was dropped off at the shelter with a shock collar on his neck and another shock collar on the neck of his Sheltie-brother.  This was apparently a misguided attempt to alter some behaviors.  Now Snickers is not perfect - but who is?  But as canine companions go --- he's a doll!  There were sores under the shock collar on Snicker's neck.  When the staff tried to take a closer look he nipped one of them. As a consequence, Snickers was put into quarantine AND because he was then classified as a biter (silly way to determine if a dog is a biter or not) this shelter could not place but had to find someone else to take him in.  So Snickers came to the Sheltie Rescue of Utah program.

What we've learned about Snickers in the short time he's been with us so far is that he's somewhat fearful of men.  He did start to snap at Jim - but now - just a few days later, if Jim has some food, he will come sit next to Jim and ask for a piece. He's learned that we know that good dogs ask nicely by first doing a SIT.  And Snickers does the cutest sit.  If you talk to him, he sometimes cocks his head to the side and is just adorable.

If I'm sitting on the couch Snickers will lay down next to me, tight up against me, and lay his head on my leg.  Snickers will try to surf the kitchen counters and will pull down any food or kitchen towels that smell good.  He'll try to go into your kitchen garbage can, if he can.  If you're standing, holding some food, he will try to jump up and grab it.  I think someone may have actually taught him to jump up for a treat and he thinks he's performing a trick that someone liked.  So he needs a little guidance in some household manners.

I discovered that Snickers knows the commands, Sit, Down, and even Roll-over.  It was very accidental that this all came out.  He's also crate trained and very nicely house-trained too.

I think that someone didn't realize what a gentle soul Snickers is, as are most dogs, and treated him as though he had no feelings and were rather rough with him.  Despite that he has the most loving and gentle disposition and is an incredible companion.  He'd love nothing more than to jump into your bed and cuddle with you.

Snickers gets along with our cat very nicely.  He vocalized a lot when he first arrived but when he found himself sleeping in our bedroom he was quite content.

We've had Snickers vaccinated, microchipped, had a comprehensive blood panel plus urinalysis done (and it all looks great), and we've had a dental done.  We x-rayed his right front leg and had it examined because we see him holding up that paw from time to time.  We've got him on an anti-inflammatory for what we now believe is a muscle sprain.

If you're interested in Snickers and would like to find out more please go to our website at http://SheltieRescueUT.org and register and fill out our online Application for Adoption.  Snickers adoption fee is $250.00 but Snickers himself, is priceless.
