About Tommy

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Rescue ID: D100008
  • General Color: White
  • Housetrained: Yes
Tommy is the product of breeding two Blue Merle Shelties which is a Very Bad Combination. Because of the genetic lottery that comes from such breedings, Tommy was born blind and deaf...and very, very white.

In his short life (three years according to the papers we were given, but his teeth suggest that he might be a little older), this incredibly sweet and loving boy has already had three or four homes. A wonderful woman in San Diego became aware of Tommy when his mom realized that she and her husband were not able to give him the attention that he needed and deserves. This great friend of Sheltie Rescue retrieved Tommy and kept him for several days until we were able to arrange for him to fly to Utah.

In only a few hours, we fell totally in love with this guy. He might be blind and deaf, but he is not disabled! Not by a long shot. He's fearless and loves to meet new people and explore new surroundings. He has a nose like a bloodhound and actually "sees" his world through scent. Scientists say that this is literally true, because the vision centers of the brain are being used!

Tommy gets along very well with others and really should have a fantastic career as a Therapy Dog. Just imagine the inspiration he will be to children and adults who have been injured, or are very ill, or are disabled.

We've had many wonderful people contact us about adopting Tommy. Before living with him we wouldn't have realized that Tommy needs a family that will be around him most of the day and night. Tommy needs enough people and activity in his day to stimulate him physically since he doesn't receive the same stimulation that other dogs get through their ears and eyes.

Tommy's adoption donation (if we can bear to have him torn away from us!) is $200.00.
