Sammy was reported to be running loose in the Eagle Mountain area in Utah for over a year.  One family there, who were certainly Sammy's angels, was worried enough about him that they put out a dog house that he could sleep in and always made sure he had plenty of food available.  Sammy was so spooky as a Sheltie on the loose that these folks could not get him to come to them for months and months though they worked very hard at this.  Eventually, Sammy came into the house where they discovered, as we have at Sheltie Rescue, that one of Sammy's favorite things to do is to cuddle up on your lap, roll over onto his back, and be just plain goofy asking for loves from you.

Since coming to Sheltie Rescue Sammy has been neutered, dewormed, heartworm tested, vaccinated and has been learning AGAIN, about being an indoor Sheltie.  I say AGAIN because he was clearly housetrained in some previous life.  He needed a little shaping up to be reliable but it didn't take much.  Sammy is also crate trained now and clearly LOVES to cuddle with his special person in bed.

For sometime to come Sammy will be a Sheltie who is going to be shy or unnerved even when someone he loves approaches him in a deliberate or assertive manner.  I think that after many months of tender loving care he will stop reacting to his own family members in this way.  Interestingly, even though he reacts like this if you approach him by walking towards him, if you sit down on the couch or the floor he'll be by your side in a split second wiping his muzzle on your leg almost like a cat and doing his best to snuggle up as close to you as he can possibly get. In this situation you can hug him, cuddle him, even correct him and he's a very happy, comfortable, loving Sheltie-boy.

For a long time to come and possibly for all of Sammy's life you will need to be watchful and careful that you don't put Sammy in a situation where he has an opportunity to bolt.  That's how he ended up on the run for over a year. That's a very dangerous and bad situation for any pet especially with the cold of our winters and the heat of our summers.

If you'd like more information on Sammy or think you'd like to adopt him please go to http://SheltieRescueUT.org.  There you will need to register first.  Then please fill out our Application for Adoption.  You can also reach us at 801-942-4762 with any questions.  We look forward to talking with you.
